GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY: GET INVOLVED IN GOOD HAND HYGIENE

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- It’s 15 October! Every year today is marked as Global Handwashing Day, led by WHO and UNICEF, to promote awareness of the importance of handwashing with soap to help prevent the spread of infections, reduce cross-contamination and save lives. This year, as the world unites in fighting over COVID-19 pandemic, the theme “Hand Hygiene for All” further amplifies the importance to achieve universal hand hygiene.

Why is Global Handwashing Day important?

This year's theme means action for hand hygiene must become a priority for everyone – for the general public, businesses and all government agencies – to help control the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hand hygiene is one of the key pillars of infection prevention to protect people from person-to-person transmission via hand contact and via contaminated surfaces. Hand hygiene facilities need to be accessible for all, even in developed countries, and there needs to be a society-wide approach to improve both facilities and hand hygiene behaviours.

Ajinomoto Group introduces nutrient profiling system, covers 500 products

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14  -- Ajinomoto Co Inc (Ajinomoto Co) will roll out its nutrition improvement activities globally with the introduction on April 1, of the Ajinomoto Group Nutrient Profiling System for Products (ANPS-P).

According to a statement, ANPS-P is a method of scientifically assessing the nutritional value of products such as powdered soups and frozen foods.

The system will cover approximately 500 products at nine Ajinomoto Group companies in seven countries, including Japan - Ajinomoto Co Inc, Ajinomoto AGF Inc, Ajinomoto Frozen Foods Co Inc, AJINOMOTO CO (THAILAND) LTD, AJINOMOTO VIETNAM CO LTD, PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA, AJINOMOTO PHILIPPINES CORPORATION, Ajinomoto (Malaysia) Bhd and AJINOMOTO DO BRASIL INDÚSTRIA E COMÉRCIO DE ALIMENTOS LTDA.

The ANPS-P developed by the Ajinomoto Group is based on the scoring method of the Health Star Rating System, an NPS used mainly in Australia and New Zealand.

This system assesses the nutritional value of products based on the quantity of each nutrient that should not be consumed in excess and the quantity of each nutrient and food group that tend to be under-represented in diets and for which intake is recommended.

The introduction of ANPS-P enables a better understanding of nutritional issues by using a common standard to assess the nutritional value of the Ajinomoto Group products.

Based on this understanding, the Ajinomoto Group will continue to revise its products and provide products with high nutritional value that make it easy to reduce salt and consume protein, among other benefits, thereby helping to improve consumer health.

Going forward, the Ajinomoto Group also plans to develop and introduce an NPS for meals that use the Ajinomoto Group products with the aim of providing total support for a nutritionally balanced diet.

University’s Boron Neutron Capture Therapy centre treats overseas brain cancer patients

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 -- National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) has converted Tsing Hua Open pool Reactor (THOR) for use in Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), in cooperation with the Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH).

On Feb 14, the melodious strains of the fourth movement of Mahler's Fifth Symphony were heard inside the building of THOR at NTHU. This is the favourite piece of music of a European woman who was here to undergo BNCT for a malignant brain tumour.

According to a statement, this was her second course of treatment and the size of malignant glioma deep in her brainstem was reduced from 3.51 cm to 1.06 cm after the first treatment.

To date, the treatment has provided a new lease on life to over 130 cancer patients worldwide.

According to Professor Chou Fong-in, BNCT is a target radiation therapy in which the patient is first injected with a boron-containing drug; once the drug has accumulated in the tumour, the neutron beam is used to irradiate the tumour for delivering curative doses specifically to tumours, while sparing normal tissue.

As explained by TVGH oncologist Chen Yi-wei, boron-10 drug contains the structure like essential amino acids and cancer cells need lots of nutrients to support their abnormal proliferation.

According to Dr Chen, the key requirements for BNCT are a boron-containing drug suitable for absorption by cancer cells and a stable neutron source with appropriate energy spectrum, whereby NTHU’s research reactor has been retrofitted to provide the neutron source.

NTHU and the Taoyuan City Government are planning to jointly develop a medical complex as part of the Taoyuan Aerotropolis to be built near the Taoyuan Airport. The BNCT will play a major role at the new facility and will be used to treat Taiwanese and overseas patients.
