Basseterre, Dec 20 (Bernama-GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Honourable Dr Terrance Drew, delivered a comprehensive analysis of the nation's fiscal performance and outlined future economic plans during his 2024 Budget Address.

2024 Budget Address Theme: Marching Forward on the Journey to a Sustainable Island State

The central theme of the 2024 budget speech is "Marching Forward on the Journey to a Sustainable Island State." The budget address, presented on 13 December 2023, underscored the government's commitment to transforming into a sustainable island state.

Seven Pillars of Sustainability

Honourable Dr Drew outlined the seven pillars forming the foundation of a sustainable island state:
  1. Water Security
  2. Energy Transition

St Kitts and Nevis' Achievements in 2023

Honourable Dr Drew acknowledged the achievements in tourism that received international recognition, positioning St Kitts and Nevis as a prominent destination in the Eastern Caribbean. The 2024 Budget Address reflects the government's commitment to sustainable development, fiscal responsibility, and the well-being of St Kitts and Nevis’ citizens. The outlined initiatives and improvements aim to strengthen the nation's economy, infrastructure, and overall prosperity.

Fiscal Landscape of St Kitts and Nevis

Overview of 2022 Fiscal Performance

Honourable Dr Drew highlighted the 2022 fiscal landscape, emphasising challenges and achievements, particularly in debt management and economic recovery.

Revenue and Grants for 2022-2023

In the past fiscal year, a deficit of US$99.2 million for the Overall Balance and a Primary Balance deficit of EC$82.9 million were reported. Total Revenue and Grants amounted to EC$1.12 billion, with Recurrent Revenue at EC$1.1 billion and Grants totalling EC$14.0 million.

Government 2022 Expenditure

Honourable Dr Drew detailed that the 2022 expenditure surpassed the budget, attributed to various government initiatives, income support programmes, and a CBI Dividend payment.

A notable decrease in the Total Public Sector Debt to EC$1.6 billion or 60.2 per cent of (Gross Domestic Product) GDP was highlighted, reflecting a decline of EC$6.5 million and an 8.9 per cent point decrease in the Debt-to-GDP ratio. Honourable Dr Drew credited this reduction to the expansion in economic activity for 2022 compared to 2021.

St Kitts and Nevis Pension Plan for 2024

Honourable Dr Drew announced the imminent launch of a Contributory Pension Plan, aimed at enhancing the welfare and financial security of public sector employees. The plan is strategically designed for a secure and sustainable pension system.

Effective 1 January 2024, the minimum wage will rise from EC$9 per hour to EC$10.75 per hour, reflecting the government's dedication to improving the financial well-being of minimum wage earners. The decision to increase the minimum wage resulted from recommendations by the National Minimum Wage Advisory Committee, led by Ambassador Sam Condor, which diligently reviewed the minimum wage through consultations.

EDISON, N.J., Nov 29 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- According to new research released by Opengear, a Digi International company (NASDAQ, DGII, www.digi.com) and provider of secure and Smart Out of Band management solutions, a staggering 97% of U.S.-based CIOs surveyed expressed serious concerns about at least one cybersecurity threat. This comprehensive survey encompassed responses from 502 CIOs and 510 network engineers in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, and Australia. The primary cybersecurity concerns highlighted in the research included malware (42%), spam and phishing (34%), social engineering (31%), and insider threats (30%). Remarkably, malware also emerged as a significant threat for 42% of the surveyed network engineers.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20231128568826/en/

While only 23% of U.S. CIOs reported distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks as a threat, 38% of network engineers reported a higher level of concern for this specific type of attack, most likely due to their close proximity to the network. To add to these concerns, U.S. engineers said that insufficient investments are enhancing the risk of cyberattacks and/or downtime (59%). This suggests that lack of budget spent on software upgrades and network upgrades, for example, leaves organizations more vulnerable to attack and has the potential to affect business continuity, which is a high priority for 97% of CIOs in the U.S. and 88% of CIOs globally.

“The skills shortage and insufficient investment in networks are two factors that have combined to encourage cybercriminals to breach businesses,” said Gary Marks, President at Opengear. “Smart Out of Band solutions enable organizations to manage their networks at all times from local and remote sites, even during an outage. Network engineers can make smarter, real-time decisions to achieve consistent network resilience and unparalleled visibility, with security and encryption features ensuring that management policies remain continually enforced.”

Continued technology investment is essential to enable engineers to safeguard networks during cyberattacks. The latest research further highlights a concerning trend, indicating that 27% of U.S. network engineers are actively contemplating leaving their current roles due to inadequate funding — an alarming contrast to the global average of 21%.

H2SITE FIRST ON-BOARD AMMONIA CRACKING SYSTEM GENERATES PURE HYDROGEN

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- H2SITE has successfully validated the first ammonia cracker to produce high-purity hydrogen for onboard power generation using a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell.

In a statement, the company said an integrated membrane reactor has been installed and operated on board of the BERTHA B supply ship, sailing the shores of the Gulf of Biscay.

“Our innovative membrane reactor technology not only brings an improvement in system efficiency but also reduces the footprint of the installation. This is especially important in applications where space is limited, such as onboard a vessel.

“We have focused our design efforts on minimising the ammonia consumption, which will be key for the scale up to suit higher power output units,” said H2SITE Technical Director, Jose Medrano.

Maritime transport is responsible for two per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, presenting significant potential for emission reduction by transitioning from hydrocarbons to green fuel options, such as hydrogen.

Ammonia cracking is gaining traction as a potential hydrogen carrier for onboard applications and it can be used directly in engines, or can be cracked into hydrogen and used in fuel cells. Before hydrogen is used, purification is necessary, especially if traces of ammonia are present.

H2SITE’s membrane reactors make sure all the ammonia is transformed, while delivering a high purity hydrogen to the fuel cell in a single process step. During navigation, as part of the H2OCEAN project, H2SITE’s cracker has successfully powered the ship's auxiliary services.

This achievement was made possible by working together with players active in the maritime decarbonisation segment such as Zumaia Offshore, Erhardt Offshore, Ajusa, and TECNALIA, along with the participation of Enagas and ABS.

This project is a stepping stone for H2SITE in the decarbonisation of maritime transport.

Based in Spain, H2SITE was established in 2020 and possesses exclusive technology for reactors and separators, facilitating the conversion of various feedstocks into hydrogen.

KING FAISAL SPECIALIST HOSPITAL AND RESEARCH CENTRE CELEBRATES THE SUCCESS OF TREATING 100 PATIENTS WITH LYMPHOCYTIC LEUKEMIA USING CAR T-CELLS

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Oct 31 (Bernama-GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In a new step that offers cancer patients a glimmer of hope and a lifeline, the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC) celebrated its success in treating the 100th patient with lymphoid leukemia using Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR T-cell) therapy. This aligns with KFSH&RC’s vision to be the optimal choice for specialized healthcare.

CAR T-cell therapy is an innovative treatment that enhances the ability of T-cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells after genetic modification in the laboratory to improve their targeting ability. This approach overcomes the challenge of distinguishing between cancer and normal cells, offering a promising method for treating lymphoid leukemia.

KFSH&RC emphasized that this innovative technology provides hope for patients with resistant leukemia and lymphoid tumors, especially those not effectively treatable with traditional methods.

As a strategic healthcare partner, KFSH&RC is sharing information about CAR T-cell therapy, its positive impact on healthcare improvement, and various healthcare solutions and innovations during the Global Health Exhibition taking place in Riyadh from October 29th to 31st.

KFSH&RC Hospital explained that this advanced therapy consists of four stages: extracting blood from the patient to obtain specific cells, then genetically modifying them in the lab for 3-4 weeks.

Shortly before CAR T-cell therapy, the patient receives a low dose of chemotherapy to enhance its effectiveness and the body's ability to fight cancer. Afterward, CAR T-cells are infused into the patient's arm, which is closely monitored for four weeks to ensure the body's adaptation.

The application of this advanced treatment in the Kingdom represents a qualitative addition to specialized medical care, reducing the financial, social, and health burdens of sending such cases abroad, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030 and its healthcare objectives.

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre is globally recognized for offering this advanced form of treatment, thanks to its comprehensive therapeutic program featuring highly skilled medical, nursing, pharmaceutical, laboratory, and social specialists supported by an integrated infrastructure.

KFSH&RC is a global leader in specialized healthcare, innovation, advanced research, and medical education. It aims to develop medical technologies and elevate the standard of healthcare worldwide through partnerships with leading local, regional, and international institutions in clinical, research, and educational fields.

KING FAISAL SPECIALIST HOSPITAL AND RESEARCH CENTRE ANNOUNCES RAPID WHOLE GENOME SEQUENCING SERVICE

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Oct 31 (Bernama-GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In a groundbreaking development for the Middle East, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC) has introduced a service called Rapid Whole-Genome Sequencing (rWGS) as part of its healthcare solutions. This service is designed to help doctors diagnose rare and genetic disorders, particularly in critically ill newborns, who require fast and precise identification of their conditions.

The Rapid Whole Genome Sequencing service is invaluable for newborns with rare diseases, as it helps them avoid the often lengthy process of tests and treatments that can stretch for months or even years without a precise diagnosis. This increases the chances of survival and reduces the overall healthcare cost by minimizing hospital admissions, unnecessary tests, and medical care.

Remarkably, the hospital has reduced the time required for this genetic testing from the typical two-month duration to less than 35 hours. Response time is paramount when planning healthcare for critically ill newborns, and swift delivery of test results ensures a prompt and tailored medical response, preventing delays that could otherwise lead to worsening the patient's condition or even death.

As part of its participation in the Global Health Summit, where KFSH&RC plays a vital role as a strategic healthcare partner, the hospital shares details about the Rapid Whole Genome Sequencing service at its exhibition booth. The hospital's cutting-edge capabilities include analyzing up to 99% of DNA sequences from patient blood samples, along with several innovative healthcare solutions.

The comprehensive genetic composition examination involves a streamlined four-step process. First, the DNA is broken down into manageable segments. Then, it is encoded with a barcode-like symbol for easy identification, similar to tracking products in a store. The examination itself is conducted using specialized equipment.
